Football & Faith... Your thoughts?
I ran across this article in the NYTimes. It was very interesting to me, as I had the privilege of meeting Seminoles Coach Bobby Bowden a number of years ago. My impression was that he was a man of genuine faith and that he deeply cared for his players and their families. (I met him through a family whose son played for Coach Bowden in the 1980's.) Give this article a read and post your thoughts. Are these coaches going to far?

"This is a lawsuit waiting to happen, and I believe university administrations are playing a game of chicken," the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, a lawyer and executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said. "But eventually, you got to believe that one kid is going to say, 'I've had enough,' and step forward."
I can't believe that anybody who calls himself a Christian, let alone a Reverend could even support a organization like that , but being the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Beyond that I can't believe that Americans haven't stood up and fought back against these minority of wackjobs liberals who hate God and anything that has to do with them.

Two things stand out to me. The first is a Bowden quote:
"You got 90 kids in a history or psychology classroom around here, and a professor can stand up and say anything he wants in creation," Mr. Bowden said recently in an interview at his office. "Why can't I tell my boys what I believe?"
Boy, he nails that one! More than one secular prof ridicules, chews up and spits out faith. So seems to me Bowden should have the same tenure protections of free speech. That's the very NATURE of the university experience! Or it's SUPPOSED to be.
Second, both Bowden and Richt in this article show great humility. I HAVE seen Christians in leadership become spiritual autocrats. But this quote is telling:
Mr. Richt has shown he is sensitive to both the threats to the Constitution and public opinion. In 2002, after Georgia clinched the Southeastern Conference East title, he began his news conference with religious comments. He was criticized by some fans and the news media, and subsequently apologized.
That is the spirit of a Christian. These men are an encouragement to ME to share MY OWN FAITH more openly.

There are several points to note here.
1. The United States is a nation founded on Biblical principles. Anyone who doubts this needs to brush up on their history.
2. This is a democracy which means the majority decision prevails. From what I read it appears the majority believe in God. If a few are offended or intimidated by that then they need to learn how to deal with it. I have been offended by the election of some of our congressmen and presidents. But I could not have them removed from office, nor should I have been able to.
3. The idea of separation of church and state does not come from the constitution. Any who doubt that need to read the constitution.
God bless coach Bobby Bowden and others like him who have the courage to take a stand for their faith. A strong faith does in fact build character and that is something that is desperately lacking in this nation. Any who doubt that need to pay closer attention the daily news.
