What Do You Do With Halloween?
I'm headed off to the Village Green tonight. As I am, I am wondering where the conversation would go thru this blogsite concerning Halloween. In the church, the positions range from one extreme to the other - it's a satanic holiday to it's harmless fun; it's the pagan Samhain festival to it's a consumer driven boon; Christians should lock the doors and turn out their lights to Christians should seize the opportunity to be a part of their communities. What do you think?
I'll give you one thought that I've had today... and I'll follow it up with more thoughts later after I've allowed you time to chime in. My one thought: I really hope that Christians aren't shoving anti-Halloween literature in kid's bags as they come to the door for candy! I recommend sweet-tarts instead. Post your comments.

Well..that was a breath of fresh air! Although..I didn't get Sweet Tarts. I do have some Laffy Taffy though. :o)
I think its possible to make too much out of..not very much. Halloween is the only night of the year that our neighbors actually talk to one another. We average..probably 500 Trick or Treaters a year at our door. Halloween has dark roots in some traditions--but at our house..all it really means is..friends and candy. When I was a kid--no one really thought of it as anything else. Why they do now--I don't have a clue.

I'm hoping that my daughter comes home quick with some candy! At 17, she's gone out with a few friends, dressed up like a gangster and her girlfriend is wearing her "can-can" costume from last year's recital! I'm glad they're out having some fun!

We started out with no Halloween. Oh, my poor eldest daughter. We call her Petri because she was the dish in which we tested the culture.
As time went along, we noticed that "Harvest Parties" were really Halloween parties. I could less and less justify holding things out.
I LOVE making costumes with the kids. Our pumpkin carving was SO much fun... My rules are no witches or occult and no gore. That given, we have a blast on Halloween, and I have no qualms whatsoever.
Poor Petri.

Well, we're still of the no Halloween camp but we do do Harvest Parties and such. I buy extra candy at that time of year and if there is a costume party the kids can attend. We both celebrated Halloween as kids, John from a Christian household and me an unbelieving household. Halloween WAS fun as a kid. All that candy is great! There is a very dark side to it however and we cannot in good conscience celebrate it now that we are grown. In particular, we did not want our children to be confused as to why we were celebrating a holiday that glorifies spooky, evil things but then are told to have nothing to do with evil.

We had a blast out on the Green handing out hot chocolate and hot cider to chilly trick-or-treaters. Children with waddling duck butts, teens with an excuse to hang out and eat candy, adults looking for friendly village fun, everybody loving a free hot drink on a cool night. Well most people. There'll always be those who are wary of anything free, those who take advantage of anything free, and those who think they have some Constitutional consumer right to complain even though it's free. (us and God's grace come to mind?) But for the most part it's a joy to cheer those rosy cheeks with a steaming cup of a pure harvest deliciousness. It brings such a smile to my face to bring a smile to other peoples' faces. If there's one thing that triumphs over darkness I'm pretty sure it would be the love of God, even if it's just in a glass of hot cider or a warm smile and a handful of candy.

Robin,
I respect your position. There *IS* a very dark side.
We used to hold our kids out of the school celebrations as well. I think your position is better than ours was. More gracious to the kids.
Your kids will grow from this if you handle it as positively as you are. While my conclusions are different than yours, I applaud you.

We allow our kids to have this holiday. Deep down I understand how God must feel when we put these celebrations in our life. But, I think the heart is where it is at, and my kids know it is costume fun and trick or treat. I think their heart is pure in this.
