More Than A Token Prayer

This afternoon I received a call from one of the 20-somethings in our congregation. He is facing some pretty important life decisions in the coming months and asked if we could get together. He wasn't looking for answers from me - he knew that I couldn't offer any advice he hadn't already heard. He called me to pray with him about it all.

This afternoon I saw this headline on a news page, "Lubbock Prays For Rain". You can see the story here. I wasn't surprised to see that the news story is actually in a category called 'Quirks'. So often people scoff at the prayers of the faithful. I ask, why wouldn't a community experiencing a sever draught pray about it? I'd bet God will show up. If I were in Lubbock I'd be carrying an umbrella.

So chime in. What is the oddest thing you've been compelled to pray about? Share an experience you've had where God has shown up powerfully in answer to prayer.

  • This is by no means the oddest thing I've prayed about, however, it is one of the clearest answers to prayer I've ever experienced. I often pray for Jesse while I drive to work. One morning I felt complelled to pray that the Lord would bless Jesse with a significant interaction or conversation to encourage him during the day. That day a man came into the shop where Jesse works, and Jesse overheard him talking about the Lord. The rest is history and he and his wife are now amough our dearest friends.

Praying for God to keep the Bobo running on empty might sound like the oddest prayer I've ever prayed. But I know I was in good company as all of the members of By Faith prayed on the dirt road to Rundu... and we travelled for hours past empty... until the vehichle rolled to a stop, and our team members in the Kombi ahead of us miraculously radio'd back to us (over a distance too great for the walkie talkies to have functioned) "Hey Lisa, we're looking at a petrol station."

  • In the summer of 1986, I worked at a resort motel in Wyoming , just outside of the Grand Teton National Park. Being the first time I was away from home and away from parents, I made a few bad decisions during that summer. by the end I was convinced I'd seen the light and was ready to seek God. I ws terrified that if I got on the plane to go home that the plane would crash and deny me the opportunity to go home and live differently--get to know my savior. I prayed that God would fix that situation...that was the summer that Frontier Airlines went out of business and guess what airline my ticket home was for??? That was a Huge God moment for my teenage soul!
