Thought Provocation / Discussion Fodder

Check this outtake of an article on Christian bands:
In 2004, popular band Switchfoot’s frontman Jon Foreman claimed to be “Christian by faith, not by genre.” "We've always been very open and honest about where the songs are coming from. For us, these songs are for everyone. Calling us 'Christian rock' tends to be a box that closes some people out and excludes them. And that's not what we're trying to do. Music has always opened my mind — and that's what we want." Likewise, Eisley, a band who previously toured with Switchfoot, believe that their music doesn’t necessarily need to be about God in order for the members themselves to be truly considered Christians. According to their website, “the members of Eisley have all been raised to have a deep faith in their Creator, God, and Saviour.” Their faith is something they consider “personal and something that should be lived out as an example, not shoved onto others.” Like Switchfoot, Eisley doesn’t want to exclude any group of people that might be interested in their music, which is why they did not sign to a Christian record label.
What do you think?

Marc over at Purgatorio makes me laugh. Check this cute emergent spoof.

In entertainment news, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels has announced full-scale changes are in the works at SNL. Several cast members are being let go, and auditions for new cast members will be held next week. You can read about it here. Who do you know that would be a great addition to SNL?

The Oscar Meyer Weiner Mobile is celebrating its 70th birthday! No kidding, someone thought that it would be a great idea to bolt a giant hotdog to a chassis and drive it around town in 1936. I still don't think it's a good idea. Of course, I'd drive a hotdog before I'd drive a Dodge - probably better performance too.

Speaking of birthdays, I am closing in on one year as a blogger. August 31st is Interactive Sermon's birthday. It all started with a little post entitled 'A Christian Ought To Look Like A Christian... Yeesh!' What kind of fitting celebration shall we throw?

  • I think it all goes back to the fact that there is no difference in sacred vs. secular... A person is in ministry no matter where God has put them. A person's mission field is their family, friends and co-workers... There are many people that are turned off immediately by the word "Christian" and if we live our lives as examples of Christ and His love, than that will draw those people into relationship. Only then will it be revealed that the sterotypical "Christian" that they know of, is not true for everyone. And then their heats will be open to hear God calling...

  • "Their faith is something they consider 'personal and something that should be lived out as an example, not shoved onto others.'”

amen to that. God's the only one that can change hearts, yet sometimes we forget that.

As for your Blog Celebration... just make sure it has NOTHING to do with lions ;-)

  • Regarding Christian bands... author Steve Stockman has written a couple books - mainly about U2 - titled Walk On. I haven't read the updated 2005 version but in the original he likened Christian music to a ghetto i.e. "the Christian music ghetto." A harsh judgment and a loaded word, but his view did seem to have some merit. Darin I know you've been on the inside and outside; what do you think?

  • I think often of the difference between BJ Thomas and Charles Colson.

Granted, Colson isn't a musician (though I swear, his prose often sings).

Both came to faith in the same era. But Thomas almost immediately cut a "Christian" album. Colson got grabbed by R C Sproul, who took him aside and told him to wait before he wrote anything. To season. To mature in faith.

Thomas ... has anyone heard from him??? He fell into the ghetto and right out. Colson began walking his faith... Yes his words and themes are undeniably Christian, but they have shoe leather. They cut and chafe sometimes.

'Course there's always the bite-back. Too much "in the world" can be "of the world." The tragedy of Creed reminds us of that. But then, that's just the nature of life... there's always that friend who just ... drifts away...
