Thought Provocation / Discussion Fodder

Christians giving Christianity a bad name? I ran across this piece today. It is one in a developing series blogger Steve Sjogren is working through. It speaks particularly of the bad taste some Christians leave in the mouths of those involved in the service industries. Several here at CCA employed in the industry have shared stories with me that concur. What are your experiences? Does this article hit you between the eyes?

A thing of the past? This article suggests that folks are shedding their wristwatches in lieu of their cellphones telling them what time it is. Remember when cellphones used to be... phones? Interestingly, I made a decision to wear my wristwatch less over the summer (relax, you'll notice I wear it every Sunday when I preach!), not in favor of the clock on my cellphone but because my girls teased me about the unsightly tan lines on my wrist.

Ah, my subscription expired! I heard today that the September issue of Christianity Today has a great article on the appeal of Calvinism among many younger evangelicals. I've got to go get a copy. Anyone read the article? What's it say? Over at Jesus Creed, Scot McKnight describes Calvinism as 'doxologically intoxicating' to the Y.E. crowd. I like the term.

Is faith making us fat? Check this. This columnist thinks so.

Thoughts to offer on any of this? Me? I'm going to belly up to the bar of doxological intoxication! Drinks are on me!

  • Okay, I will admit I use my cell phone to check the time. But I have good reason. First, with 3 kids to get ready in the morning, (4 if you count Jimmy) I don't always remember it, but my cell phone is always in the diaper bag. Secondly, the couple of watches I own seem to make the theft detectors at many stores go off. It took me months to finally figure this out after some nice security guards checked my keys, my cell phone and then finally one checked my watch. So if not for my cell phone some days I would be late, or as I like to say, I would be on NH time. --E

  • hehe... interesting choice of article :-) Calvinism and baptists, eh? I read it... very interesting thoughts, and I always like hearing the different views, although at this point in my life I have been firm on not making any choices in any not heaven or hell issues just because I don't want to base my faith on it. Who knows maybe I will change my mind, but at this point thats where I stand. I am already sure that I will be bombarded with many big terms and theologies, and tonight's assignment for my OTprophets class was to state my beliefs on the timing, purpose, and a few other things on the rapture, tribulation, Christ's Second coming, and millenialism. Well I'm not sure how much my professor will like my paper but I wrote about how I believe only God knows the timing and how it will play out, and I'm even using that Scot McKnight quote from a few posts ago. I don't know but it's hard when different people I admire and respect believe in a variety of different things, each of them believing it's right. I think I've just realized I'd rather learn on getting to know God better and His love for me and let all the theologians try and figure out when Christ is coming back and draw out all the fancy maps. Because God is the one that's all knowing, not us and I think it's more important to get to know God than try and figure out the things we will never understand.

    Miss you all!!!

  • Two thoughts... First Amanda, my congrats, you expound the pan-Millenial view better than any other I've heard...

    Haven't heard of pan-Millenialism?

It'll all pan out in the end...

(honestly, I think a good slow decision making process is a good one ... and even when you make some categorical decisions, to hold them loosely is also wise)

Second... at last! A positive aspect of being "drunk in the Spirit."

    hehe

  • I don't believe those dispensational sharks will allow you a 'pan-millenial' view. Careful! You might be in for discipline. And, you're a Calvinist... you just don't know it. Fins! Watch for those fins!

  • hehe... funny how I write something on how I don't want to be in a category yet I am told that what I think is a category with a big word... sigh... I can't win :-) and no I have never heard of pan-millenialism, but maybe I will soon. hehe I'm watching pastor darin! one of my proffesors just informed me he would be teaching from a dispensational view and with all the classes I'm taking right now I'm sure I will get a good dose. have i mentioned that I am technically taking 21 credits right now? please pray for me! haha... i miss you guys so much! Jackie I hope life is going well and that dropping steph off wasn't too hard I miss ya!
