Did You Just Call Me A Kum Ba Yah?

Just the other night a young JFITM (that's Jesus Freak In The Making for all you fundamentalist types) asked me what the song 'Kum Ba Yah' was all about. Of course, I hymned and hawed about the words meaning 'Come by here', muttered under my breath something about Hebrew, Gulah or Afrikaans, and then picked up a guitar and serenaded her. It was such a powerful God-moment, I wouldn't be surprised if she had an epiphany right then and there. In fact, it was so powerful an experience, I'll bet she's singing the song in her head still tonight!

I ran across this piece that speaks to the origins of the song. Give it a read. Then join me and my new JFITM in a chorus. All together now... Kum ba Yah, my Lord; Kum ba Yah!

  • ... Ahhhhh, but you see the problem is that we haven't gone to the original languages to gain our understanding and reach a truth about this important verse.

If one seeks out the New Millinery Commentary (warning, very subtle joke in that) one will find that this is actually an ancient Coptic hymn that came out of the Greek revival of Annie.
