Primary text: Ephesians 2:11–22
Core idea: Before church is something we evaluate, it is something Christ has made. He brings outsiders near, makes divided people one, and builds them together as God’s dwelling place.
Aim for the week: Receive church as a reality created and inhabited by God, then consider how Jesus’ faithfulness to this people invites our own.
Discussion
1) Opener — What counts as “worth it”?
What usually makes a church gathering feel worthwhile to you? What tends to make it feel disappointing?
What do those reactions reveal about what you expect church to do?
2) Read Ephesians 2:11–22 aloud
Trace the changes Paul describes: far / near, hostility / peace, strangers / citizens, outsiders / household. What stands out?
Which of these changes do the people accomplish? Which are things Christ has already done?
Paul ends with a people being built together into “a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” Why might that be a surprising climax?
3) God’s dwelling place
When you hear that “God is present,” what do you instinctively expect to experience?
Does Paul’s claim depend on these Christians feeling God’s presence? What makes it true?
What might we miss if we measure God’s presence mainly by intensity, insight, or emotion?
4) Receiving before measuring
Notice how much of the passage is about what Christ has done: brought near, made one, reconciled, given access, built together. What changes when church begins with Jesus’ faithfulness before ours?
Where are you most tempted to evaluate church before you inhabit it?
When church does not immediately give you what you hoped for, what might faithful participation look like instead?
5) What is faithfulness doing TO me?
Where has staying connected to God’s people already exposed, stretched, softened, or strengthened something in you?
Where might Jesus be using people you did not choose to make you more like him?
Practice for the week
One pause: Before your next gathering, pray: “Jesus, you have made us your people. Help me receive what you are building.”
One place: Notice one moment when your instinct is to evaluate, withdraw, or remain a spectator. Practice one small act of faithful presence.
One reflection: What did faithfulness ask of me this week? Where did Jesus meet me?
